THE PLAYERS Championship is well underway and with one round of the tournament in the bag, fans and players alike are very confused. It may have been one of the most unpredictable first rounds with legends and former winners tied for last (yeah, we see you Lefty), and a few players tied for first have never won a major championship. It sets today and this weekend up for an exciting event when no one is quite sure what is going to happen.
So, how do you predict an incredibly unpredictable tournament? We’ll give it our best shot.
Tiger Woods: Let’s talk about the man who has taken over all of golf’s headlines. Just when you think he’s going to choke, mess up or go downhill, he’s right back in it. He finished the first round -1 after playing with the even line all day. His head is in the right place and he’s focused so there’s a good chance he can climb the leader board as the day goes on. The first round gave Woods quite the wake-up call and we’re eager to see where his head is at today.
Jason Day: Coming in to this tournament off a win at the Wells Fargo Championship, makes us think that he’ll be fueled by this victory and heading for another win at THE PLAYERS. Day has had a good and consistent running with TPC Sawgrass. He is very familiar with the course, comfortable with it, and after a solid first round effort, his future for the rest of the weekend looks promising!
Matt Kuchar: Hanging out at the top of the leaderboard, Kuchar’s opening round at THE PLAYERS Championship was one to remember. He was recognized for the shot of the day by the PGA Tour for his 64-foot putt on the 11th hole. Kuchar was the only defending champion in the six-way tie for the lead after the opening round. The former PLAYERS winner was not on his A game during THE PLAYERS 2017 but after a phenomenal first round, Kuuuuuch is back to play!
Jon Rahm: He’s a young fighter who is clawing his way to the top. After his incredible performance at The Masters®, it’s clear this kid isn’t one to back down. The 23-year-old finished strong after the opening round and it looks like he’s just getting started. Rahm hit 14 of the 18 greens during the opening round at THE PLAYERS, finishing at 4 under.
