A Day Spent at TPC Sawgrass, Home of THE PLAYERS® Championship

One of the world’s most recognizable golf courses, TPC Sawgrass has been home to THE PLAYERS® Championship, the PGA TOUR’s flagship event, for the last 37 years. Ahead of the tournament, which hosts the strongest field in all of golf, taking place from March 12-17, 2019, we visited the hallowed turf to talk to those closest to the event and course, and what sets it apart.

Strongest Field in Golf

Built with the golf fan in mind by then-PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane R. Beman, the Stadium Course was opened in 1982 to improve the overall on-site fan experience. Working alongside renowned architect Pete Dye, Deane R. Beman brought this championship-caliber course to the fore for golf fans.

PLAYERS Championship 2019“Pete Dye built this golf course for the fans. It is a course that challenges the best players in the world, make no mistake about that. Since day one, it has always been about the fans, and Deane Beman built that, the concept of Stadium golf,” Bill Hughes, General Manager at TPC Sawgrass told us.

Indeed a course renowned for its level of difficulty, in recent times the appearance of the course has changed as time has gone on. Since the conclusion of THE PLAYERS Championship in 2016, holes 6,7 and 12 have undergone some renovations, most notably on 12 where it is now a drivable par-4.

“Every modification since 1982 has been about the competitiveness of the tournament; it is a stern and firm test of golf that favors no one, both the longest and shortest hitters in the game have won here,” said Hughes.

Unquestionably the flagship event of the PGA TOUR, THE PLAYERS Championship is unrivaled when it comes to prestige, and that is something everyone at TPC Sawgrass is proud of.

“From a players’ perspective, it is the strongest field in all of golf, one of the largest purse, and one of the largest television audiences in golf. With over 200,000 fans out here loving and supporting this special event. It’s emotional, it’s special, it’s relevant. With respect to experience, THE PLAYERS Championship is totally unrivaled.”

Unprecedented Experience

When discussing THE PLAYERS Championship, excitement is the first word that comes to mind, that is according to Executive Director of THE PLAYERS, Jared Rice.

THE PLAYERS ClubWith experience comes exclusivity in the shape of THE PLAYERS Club this May. Complete with access to the Clubhouse, gourmet food and premium open bars, these hospitality venues, located with picturesque views of the signature 17th tee and the 18th green, are available only to those with PLAYERS Club access.

“Borne out of the idea that we (THE PLAYERS) needed a premium experience that was not only befitting of the Clubhouse, but touched on the expectation that the fan was looking for a top-level experience. Our key was being able to provide an on-course experience.”

“In terms of exclusivity, THE PLAYERS Club facility on 17 and 18 are for members only, and is the closest physical hospitality structure to the closing hole. Being able to see this amazing hole this close is pretty outstanding. Members will have signature views, the vista of being 30-35 foot in the air and clear vantage points to the most exciting finish in all of golf – what more could you ask for?”

A Pure Test

THE PLAYERS ChampionshipAn event 365-days of the year in the making, THE PLAYERS Championship is, without question, the purest test in all of golf. With the history it encompasses, the field it possesses, the sheer exclusivity that THE PLAYERS Club gives members. In the words of General Manager at TPC Sawgrass, Bill Hughes, “there’s only one of them – it’s THE PLAYERS Championship.”

In 2019, enjoy unprecedented on-site access you simply cannot get anywhere else. Watch the world’s best players battle it out with private access to the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse and suites overlooking the 18th green and signature 17th.
