Did you know 11 cameras are specifically positioned to focus on the famed, 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass during THE PLAYERS Championship? It is the shortest yet most dramatic hole throughout the entire course. Sitting at just 132 yards from tee to green with a 78 ft green, your ball can either land in the small bunker, on the green or in the water, preferably not the latter.
Fun Facts about "The Island Green" at TPC Sawgrass
Over the life of this hole, more than 100,000 balls have been retrieved from the surrounding water. The concept of the 17th hole was created by accident, and was only supposed to be partially surrounded by water. Sand is necessary when creating a golf course, however when they got to building “The Island Green” the sand had already been dug up, leaving a large crater and no choice but to make it into an actual island.
The most famous incident that has occurred on the hole was when Steve Lowery managed to hit the ball on the green, only to have it then scooped up by a seagull, carried off and dropped in to the water. Talk about a tough break!
The course record, which was created in 1992 by Fred Couples, is 63. Since then, Greg Norman (1994), Roberto Castro (2013), Martin Kaymer (2014) and Jason Day (2016), have matched that record. Speaking of records, in May of 2007 a record of 50 balls landed in the water surrounding the green.
