10 Reasons We Are Thankful for THE PLAYERS Championship

Thanksgiving is a time for reflection and gratitude, to give thanks and praise for the wonderful things in our lives. Here at THE PLAYERS Experiences, we thought we would give 10 reasons why we are thankful for the PGA TOUR’S flagship event, the most anticipated golf tournament all year, the best field in golf taking on the purest test the game with one of the largest purse in all of golf on offer, THE PLAYERS Championship.

  1. Deane Beman. Serving as PGA TOUR commissioner from 1974 to 1994, it was Beman’s brainwave which brought both the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass and THE PLAYERS Championship to fruition. Designed to improve the overall on-site fan experience, the tournament has grown to be the TOUR’s biggest event.
  2. Pete Dye. While Beman’s visionary was essential to the formation of THE PLAYERS, it was golf course designer Dye who made it a physical reality. Pursuing a course “the world had yet to see”, the result was something the golfing world had yet to see. Complete with the signature Island Green on 17, the course stretches over 7,000 yards.
  3. Sergio 2008 PLAYERS.jpgSergio Garcia. Winner in 2008 and runner-up twice in 2015 and 2007, it seems the Spaniard keeps some of his best golf for THE PLAYERS. Battling wins of up to 40 mph, Garcia produced one of the finest finishes in the tournament’s history with a masterclass in mid- and long-range putting when crowned champion back in 2008.
  4. Perks chipping. Entering the 2002 tournament as a virtual unknown, New Zealander Craig Perks produced two of the best chip shots in PLAYERS history on 16 and 18, with a 28-foot birdie putt wedged in between, to claim the unlikeliest of victories. The win was his only PGA TOUR victory.
  5. Image result for the island green at tpc sawgrassThe Island Green. Perhaps the most iconic hole in all of golf, club members suggest a total of 100,000 golf balls are lost to the Island Green every year.
  6. Saluting to service. As an appreciation to the men and women who dedicate their lives to the protection of this country, THE PLAYERS Championship offers complimentary admission to active military duty, reserve, retirees, and their dependents.
  7. The fans. Without them, this tournament would not be what it is today. Giving the great golf fans an unprecedented experience with the first true Stadium Course. The overall on-site fan experience is unrivaled.
  8. Playoffs. Since its inception in 1974, THE PLAYERS Championship has been decided by a playoff on five separate occasions, three of them coming in the past nine tears. Filled with drama and tension, Jeff Sluman missed a 6-foot birdie putt to win on the second playoff hole in 1987 as a spectator jumped into the water on 17. He would eventually succumb to Sandy Lyle on the third playoff hole.
  9. The Golden Bear. Winner of the inaugural tournament by two shots in 1974, Jack Nicklaus holds the record for the most wins of all-time with three (also won in 1976 and 1978).
