THE PLAYERS Championship has been played at The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass since 1982. As the first true “Stadium Course,” it was designed to improve the overall on-site fan experience and the course itself is tough even for the greatest players in the world.
The PGA Tour has come up with a standardized formula for all tour events that divides the tournament’s purse designating a specific percentage based on each place on the leaderboard. A PGA Tour tournament winner receives 18% of the overall purse, while the 70th place receives 0.2% of the prize fund.
Four years and hundreds of conversations later, the PGA Tour and PGA of America made the decision in August of 2017 to switch up the golf calendar. This involved moving the PGA Championship back to May for the first time in 70 years and THE PLAYERS back to March for the first time since 2007. The topic that sparked the conversation of re-arranging the calendar was golf’s return to the Olympics and the PGA Tour’s want to wrap up their FedEx Cup season before the NFL season started.
